NDA's Nuclear Research Portfolio (NRP) for Spent Fuel and Nuclear Materials (SF&NM)

Eden Nuclear and Environment and our partners are delighted to have been awarded a place on the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's Research Portfolio Framework (2024-2026 with two 12 month extension options) for "Spent Fuels and Nuclear Materials (SF&NM)".

Our team, which includes Cavendish Nuclear Limited, Integrated Decision Management Ltd, Lucideon Limited, NSG Environmental Ltd, Nuclear-21, Onet Technologies CN and the University of Bristol, are looking forward to supporting NDA on this important Framework over the next four years.

The Framework contract is intended to provide research and development to support the development and implementation of the Spent Fuels and Nuclear Materials strategies as defined by the NDA strategy. The topics covered include:

  • Spent Fuels, which includes improved wet storage and extended wet fuel storage, potential fuel drying and storage, fuel storage strategy alignment with disposal, development of non-active experimental capability and long-term management of spent fuel; and,
  • Nuclear Materials, which includes plutonium management options (suitability for reuse as MOX, reuse in modern nuclear reactors, immobilisation for disposal, long-term storage, disposability, security, non-proliferation and safeguards) and uranics management options.

Dr Paul Gilchrist, Managing Director of Eden Nuclear and Environment Ltd, said:

"We are extremely delighted to have the opportunity to build upon our last four years of work and continue our support to the NDA's in their new NRP framework for Spent Fuels and Nuclear Materials. This framework is vitally important to the delivery of the UK's civil nuclear decommissioning mission, and we will utilise the deep and diverse expertise from our team and our new partners to support the NDA over the next four years."
