Dr Paul Gilchrist

Managing Director

Paul was appointed Managing Director in November 2023, after joining the company in 2019. He is a Chartered Chemist (CChem) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).

Paul’s career in the nuclear sector has spanned over 35 years, and he has held senior roles in research, national strategy and policy, engineering, and academia. He is also a Visiting Professor in Nuclear Fuel Cycle at the University of Manchester’s nuclear postgraduate Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Nuclear Energy.

Paul’s key expertise is nuclear materials, spent fuels and high-level waste management. Since joining Eden NE, Paul has completed consultancy work for a wide variety of clients, including the Norwegian Nuclear Regulator, DSA (spent fuel and nuclear waste management strategy and safety); NDA (Strategy 4 Integrated Impact Assessment); RWM (Credible Options for Vitrified Waste Management); and Sellafield Limited (Site End States). Paul is also Eden NE’s Technical Manager on the NDA’s Direct Research Portfolio (Spent Fuels and Nuclear Materials) and Framework Manager for the DSA’s Consultancy Services Contract. 

Paul has a proven track record in national level programme and strategic innovation, using influence and knowledge to affect change in front end engineering project delivery, regulatory approaches and scientific understanding in both small projects and multi-billion pound nuclear programmes. He has detailed experience in all aspects of the nuclear cycle and technologies, including Government nuclear policy development and Government level business case delivery. He has been a senior consultant to Government and industry for “New Nuclear” Funded Decommissioning Programmes (FDPs), in particular Decommissioning and Waste Management Plan (DWMP) assessment and development. Prior to joining Eden NE, he held senior management roles for over 20 years in Jacobs, NDA, BNFL Engineering Division and BNFL R&D Division.   

Within Eden NE, Paul is the Training Director and manages the Eden NE IT system and security. He also manages the Quality Assurance (QA) systems in place at Eden NE (ISO 9001) ensuring they are properly maintained and are fit for purpose.
