
Tom is an Associate Director and joined Eden NE in November 2022. He has over 20 years working experience in the nuclear industry, is a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional (CRadP), a Chartered Physicist (CPhys) and has an MBA. Tom has been responsible for onsite waste operations and for developing national radioactive waste management strategy. He has over 9 years' experience of working as a consultant and is an effective Project Manager and Technical Lead, delivering many projects to time, cost, and quality.
Tom spent 9 years working on the Harwell nuclear licensed site, for UKAEA/RSRL. He was the Waste Manager in an operations team, responsible for characterisation and for ensuring solid radioactive waste was managed in a cost-effective manner which met stakeholder expectations. He also helped develop and implement new methods for packaging 'problematic' ILW and gained acceptance from stakeholders and regulators. He was responsible for managing, minimising, and sentencing secondary waste and implemented new arrangements to divert large volumes of non-radioactive waste. After being seconded into the organisation, Tom joined RWM to set up a new programme of work (now called the Strategic Waste Programme) to develop and improve UK strategy for HAW management, working closely with the NDA Waste Strategy team. He led work with regulators, NDA, LLW Repository, site personnel and other stakeholders to agree strategic direction.
Tom joined Eden NE from Jacobs, where he was the Team Leader for the Radioactive Waste Strategy Team. He led the project to scope priority work for the Integrated Waste Management Programme, he supported the Strategic Waste Programme with the development of a national strategy for waste storage, he managed a project on problematic waste, and managed a review of waste treatment technologies for Sellafield. As well as managing projects, he was the lead waste management consultant for the decommissioning concept design for Trawsfynydd reactors and for decommissioning an experimental facility at Harwell. Tom is also a Trustee of the Eden NE Share Incentive Plan.
