Shelly is Chief Expert in Radiological and Environmental Protection at Eden NE, and is a former Director of Eden NE. She is a Fellow of the Society for Radiological Protection (FSRP), a certificated Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA) and a Chartered Radiation Protection Professional (CRadP). Shelly has over 40 years of experience of radiation protection and radioactive waste management, including over 30 years at NRPB/HPA (now UK Health Security Agency).
She brings a wealth of experience on the radiological impact of disposal of radioactive waste and on radiological assessments of radioactively contaminated land. She uses this experience to assess the safety of waste disposal facilities, to assess restoration strategies for nuclear sites, to perform waste management options studies, and in the development of guidance.
Her assessment work has included the development of biosphere models and intrusion models for waste disposal assessments; development and maintenance of Environmental Safety Cases (ESCs) for radioactive waste disposal in near surface facilities and landfill sites; and radiological assessments for delicensing and the clean-up of radioactively contaminated land. Her other work includes a review of the regulatory regime for nuclear sites in the final stages of decommissioning; the protection of groundwater from non-radioactive pollutants for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM) (now part of Nuclear Waste Services (NWS)); and facilitation of stakeholder workshops.
Shelly was leader of the waste management group at NRPB/HPA for over 20 years providing advice to government departments, regulators and the NDA on waste disposal and contaminated land; advising on stakeholder involvement for waste management projects; responding to radiation incidents in 2006 and 2011; and developing a decision framework for recovery after radiation incidents, including the response to mass casualty events.
Shelly has worked as an invited expert on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) missions to various countries, including Ukraine and Japan, and has lectured on IAEA waste management training courses.
Shelly is also a Director of the Corporate Trustee company for the Eden NE Employee Benefit Trust (EBT). The EBT is the major shareholder of Eden NE and is a key component of Eden NE's employee ownership model.
