About Dr Ian Godfrey

Dr Ian Godfrey

Principal Consultant

Ian joined Eden NE in 2018 and is a Principal Consultant. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC). Ian's background is in the field of materials chemistry and prior to joining Eden NE he worked at University College London characterising functional, thermochromic metal-oxide nanomaterials and thin films. During his PhD, Ian gained a year of experience living and working in Japan with the Advanced Institute of Science and Technology in Ishikawa.

Since joining Eden NE, Ian has worked on projects in areas such as assessment of radiological impacts to non-human biota and consideration of the non-radiological hazards of radioactive waste, options assessments and requirements management. He has worked on several environmental safety cases for radioactive waste disposal facilities and on radiological assessments of discharges for power stations. He has contributed to disposability assessments for several GDF waste packaging proposals.

He has written regulatory submissions for clients. Ian has supported radiological assessments for both new-build and disposal facilities. He contributed to a feasibility study that considered whether the environmental protection aspects of a novel reactor design could meet UK regulatory requirements. Ian has also supported the external-stakeholder engagement for the options assessment for a decommissioning project that involved multiple external landowners, as well as other stakeholders including regulators and local authorities.

Ian's work has also involved understanding and managing the non-radiological hazards associated with radioactive waste, including asbestos and mercury wastes. He supports the Low Level Waste Repository's Environmental Safety Case (ESC) team, and has authored reports and memoranda for them. For example, he contributed to their Enhanced Periodic Review, which was submitted to the Environment Agency in 2020.

Ian also has significant experience in providing freelance technical editing services in chemistry and materials science, revising scientific manuscripts prior to peer-reviewed publication to ensure that they were clear, accurate and met all required language, technical and formatting standards.
