A Placement Year at Eden NE

July 16, 20261 min read

Jay Hebblethwaite spent the past year with Eden Nuclear and Environment as part of his industry placement with the University of Manchester, where he is studying Computer Science and Mathematics. Since joining Eden NE, Jay has been developing his professional skills under the guidance of our team, including contributions to LLWR projects, exploring capabilities of GoldSim software, utilising Python and Eden NE’s transition to a new website.

Jay investigated capabilities of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) modelling. Using GoldSim (link) software package, Jay created a “proof of concept” model of Sellafield’s Box Encapsulation Plant. This illustrated the advantages of DES models and their use of identifying key performance indicators to clients and how to improve efficiency of factory line operations. Jay presented these results to the company and talked about the wider use of DES models.

This year Eden NE was also able to support Jay competing internationally, as part of the national Team representing Great Britian, in Freestyle Skiing. He placed third in a FIS competition in Germany and won gold in slopestyle at the British Championships. He also qualified for and competed on the European Cup circuit, in Austria and Switzerland, where he competed alongside multiple Olympians. This was all during his first season back after a two-year battle with Long Covid. This highlights Jay’s dedication and drive both in and out of Eden NE’s Penrith Office.

At Eden NE, we are committed to supporting emerging talent like Jay, helping to nurture the next generation of nuclear professionals, and ensuring long-term knowledge transfer across the industry.
